After exploring Kathmandu, we make our way to Beshishahar (only 500m), near historic Gorkha, and walk north along the Marsyangdi River valley, while the peaks of Manaslu, Lamjung Himal and Himalchuli soar above. Lush forests give way to arid northern terrain as we ascend. Acclimatise in the colourful Buddhist valley of Manang, among the shrewd Manangi traders.
Cross the Thorang La and descend to Muktinath. Here, eternal blue flames of natural gas are revered in Buddhist and Hindu temples, which attract pilgrims from afar. The trail then descends into the deepest river gorge in the world, the Kali Gandaki, and winds back to Pokhara through busy villages, banana groves, mandarin orange orchards, green forests and terraced hillsides.

This is an epic journey, from verdant lowlands to the barren windswept Tibetan Plateau, seeing the lifestyles of diverse ethnic groups along the trail. One of the world's best walks.
